Stephen Colbert launches new television program after concluding “Late Show” finale.
Stephen Colbert returned to late‑night programming on Friday, a day after the final episode of “The Late Show” aired. The former CBS host surprised viewers by front‑lining a public‑access program titled “Only in Monroe,” which he first appeared on in 2015 during an early test run before launching the national show.
The two‑hour special was filmed at the Ed Sullivan Theatre and featured a segment called “Monroe News.” Colbert also welcomed back former guest Enimen, who had appeared on the 2015 episode of the same local program. Fans noted that the appearance was unannounced and heavily referenced local themes.
CBS announced in July that “The Late Show,” which had aired for 33 years, would be canceled following the network’s merger with Skydance. The decision was criticized by some as political pressure, though CBS said it was a financial move. Colbert has publicly opposed the Trump administration, but the network maintains the change was business‑driven.
The finale included guests such as Paul McCartney, Ryan Reynolds, and several other late‑night hosts. The broadcast ended with McCartney performing “Hello, Goodbye.” Colbert has indicated that he will focus on writing a screenplay for the next “Lord of the Rings” film.
