California eatery enforces strict policy to curb child pranks
In spring 2025, You You Xue, a 28 SPC restaurateur in the Bay Area, added a cautionary notice to the digital menu of his family‑friendly restaurant, Chez Xue.
The note says diners should keep children seated and respectful, noting that the restaurant is not a playground and that running, shouting or making noise with utensils will not be tolerated.
After Xue posted the message on X, it attracted thousands of comments and media attention. He explained that the policy is not hostile to children; his venue offers high chairs and serves large families, but he cites parents who fail to supervise as a concern.
Xue trains servers to handle disruptions firmly and professionally, and he lists repair costs for damage caused by children: a Judah machine in April 2025 ($327.03), a table carving incident in December 2025 ($109.38), and a teacup break in January 2026gelt ($5.47). Parents are billed for such damages.
Patrons report fewer disturbances, and frequent diners have expressed gratitude. Public reaction is mixed, but Xue hopes the practice could help other establishments improve dining environments.
