Ackie Tohn Shares Experience of Double Breast Removal Surgery
Jackie Tohn, known for her role in “Nobody Wants This,” announced on May 15 that she had undergone an elective preventive double mastectomy on December 1, 2025. The procedure was prompted by a BRCA1 genetic mutation that Tohn inherited after her father was diagnosed with metastatic breast cancer in January 2025. The mutation increased her estimated lifetime risk of breast cancer to 85 percent, according to a genetic counselor.
Tohn opted for surgical removal of both breasts rather than enhanced surveillance after learning of the high risk. Pathology confirmed the presence of pre‑cancerous cells in both breasts. She stated that she has chosen the operation to lower her cancer risk and to inform others about genetic testing.
The actress has used the platform of TODAY to explain the importance of family history in assessing risk. She stressed that rare, early‑onset, or multiple cancers in a family line warrant consultation with a health professional. Despite most breast cancers lacking a hereditary link, she emphasized that regular screening remains essential.
Tohn’s case highlights the role of BRCA1 testing—especially in families with unusual cancer presentations—in guiding preventive medical decisions.
