Hayden Panettiere Responds to Allegations About Leaving Daughter
Hayden Panettiere explained that in 2018 she transferred custody of her daughter Kaya to her former fiancé, former heavyweight champion Wladimir Klitschko, so she could focus on treatment for substance abuse and mental‑health issues. The change was made while Klitschko remained the primary caregiver for Kaya in Europe.
The actress said the decision was driven by her need to pursue recovery and to protect her daughter from ongoing instability. She noted that Kaya had established a stable life overseas, learning five languages and living with close family and friends. Panettiere confirmed that she continues to visit Kaya frequently and maintains regular video contact to keep a strong bond.
Panettiere clarified that she did not view herself as abandoning her child; instead, she felt withdrawing was necessary for the health of both herself and her daughter. She emphasized that Kaya knows both parents support and love her, and that her stay in Europe was not intended to separate them permanently.
The actress stated her journey toward sobriety has improved her overall well‑being, and she remains committed to her role as a mother while respecting the life her daughter has built abroad.
