Bowen Yang explains his mid‑season ‘Saturday Night Live’ departure – NBC 6 South Florida

Bowen Yang Announces Exit from Saturday Night Live Midseason.

Bowen Yang confirmed that he left Saturday Night Live during the 2026 season, citing a lack of central roles in the show’s long‑running format. The comedian, who first joined the program as a writer in 2018 and became a featured player in season 45, reported that he had originally been scheduled to depart after season 50. In a June 8 interview with Variety and CNN’s Actors on Actors, Yang explained that his contributions had largely been “supporting” characters rather than leading roles.

Creator Lorne Michaels later persuaded Yang to remain for a short run of additional episodes. According to Yang, Michaels contacted him while he was attending the U.S. Open and asked him to set an example for incoming cast members. Yang accepted, noting that the request came from a person who had been instrumental in his career.

Yang’s final episode aired as part of season 51, following the departures of several other cast members earlier in the year. The 2026 exit follows the exit of seven original cast and writing staff from the show. The decision to leave was confirmed by official statements from NBC and the SNL production team.
