Discover Dotcake: The Cupcake Dessert Going Viral
Miniature cakes called Dotcups, produced by The Dotcakes bakery in Roslyn, New York, have attracted significant public attention after gaining popularity on social media. The bakery, founded in 2019 by Alex Posner, sells the treats in four flavors: classic white, chocolate, vanilla chip, and red velvet. Each 8‑ounce Dotcup begins at $32 for a set of four when ordered directly from the bakery, while the products are priced at $11 each at partnered grocer Butterfield Market.
The partnership with Butterfield began in October, and a surge in orders was reported around April 24. Posner states that the company now sends approximately 1,250 units to Butterfield twice weekly and that the bakery’s own storefront sold roughly 2,600 units in a single week during the most recent spike. Lines have formed at Butterfield, with customers reportedly waiting up to 45 minutes on Wednesdays and several hours on Saturdays for restocked inventory.
The product’s simplicity and extensive sprinkling of nonpareils have drawn both praise for its nostalgic appeal and criticism for being overly basic. Posner acknowledges the popularity, noting that the design’s packaging and aesthetic presentation were key factors in the Dotcups’ viral spread.
