Miami school buses reinstall cameras, drivers will soon receive fines.
Miami-Dade County officials announced that camera systems on nearly 900 school buses will resume operation on Monday, May 4, 2026. The cameras are designed to capture drivers who fail to stop at bus stops for pick‑up or drop‑off.
The program had been paused over a year ago after drivers reported ticketing for non‑compliant stops. New guidance says the cameras will issue warning notifications for a 14‑day period before tickets are issued.
Superintendent Jose Dotres said the relaunch aims to standardize enforcement and improve student safety. Sheriff authority and school officials affirmed the consistency of the monitoring process.
The relaunch is intended to change driving behavior near schools. No additional tickets will be issued until the warning period ends.
The system’s activation date was corrected to May 4 after an initial error. No incidents have been reported since the cameras went back online.
