Wisconsin activists protest beagle shelter, tensions rise.
A large group of animal‑welfare advocates gathered at Ridglan Farms in Wisconsin over the weekend of April 20–21. The facility, which breeds beagles for scientific research, was the focus of a protest that began as a demonstration outside its gates.
Around 1,000 protesters assembled outside the farm, including Ella Magers of Miami, who made a 1,500‑mile trip to join the demonstration. The group had previously entered the building in March, during which about 30 dogs were taken by occupants and more than twenty people were arrested on allegations of trespassing and other charges.
During the latest confrontation, activists allegedly damaged property and smashed a gate. Ridglan Farms released security footage that it claims shows an individual driving a vehicle into the gate, labeling the event an “assault.” The farm released statements claiming that protestors had spread false and misleading information about its research practices and its commitment to animal welfare.
Law enforcement reported a chaotic encounter with no injuries among participants. The legal status of the protestors remains pending, as authorities continue investigations into the incident.
