Nick Reiner requests trust fund access to pay legal fees

Rob Reiner and his wife Michele Singer Reiner were stabbed to death at their Brentwood, Los Angeles home on December 14, 2024. Police arrested their 32‑year‑old son, Nick Reiner, hours later. He has pleaded not guilty to two counts of murder and faces a pretrial hearing in September. District Attorney Nathan Hochman has not yet decided whether to pursue the death penalty.

Nick Reiner is filing a civil petition in Los Angeles County Superior Court to obtain money from a trust his parents created for him. The trust was set to grant him half of its assets when he turned 30 and the remainder at 35. Reiner was denied the funds he was entitled to at age 30, and the trustee, attorney Paul R. Kanin, has provided several excuses that the court says have no legal basis. The trust is believed to hold at least $1.5 million, but Kanin has not disclosed its exact value.

The petition argues that Reiner is presumed innocent and that the funds are needed to support his defense and basic needs while he is in custody. If the money becomes available, Reiner’s former attorney, Alan Jackson, has stated that his firm is willing to resume representation.

The case remains largely under wraps, with few public details released and an autopsy order keeping most forensic information confidential.
