Miami’s mental‑health diversion center stays inactive amid prolonged controversy
A council meeting in Miami‑Dade County on Wednesday concluded without moving forward on the county’s planned mental‑health diversion facility located at 2200 NW 7th Avenue. The building was purchased with bond funds approved in 2004 and has remained unoperational for years.
Retired Judge Steven Le Fman has championed the project, arguing that a dedicated facility could help reduce homelessness, jail incarceration, and psychiatric hospital stays. County commissioners generally agreed that the center could be life‑saving and could relieve jail capacity.
Chair Anthony Rodriguez raised concerns about sustainability, questioning whether the county could maintain the facility beyond its initial two‑year funding period without increasing property taxes. He requested clarification on long‑term financial plans.
No decision was made during the meeting, and the facility will remain closed pending further deliberation. The council will review the issue again at a future meeting, with officials expected to provide additional financial details.
