Man accused of breaking into Miami Springs restaurant to watch TV: ‘Made himself at home’

Male intruder enters Miami Springs diner to watch television.

A 34‑year‑old Miami resident, Johnnie Sanders, was taken into custody on Monday night after officers discovered him inside Uncle Hanks’ Hideaway, a restaurant located at 78 Canal St. in Miami Springs. Police said Sanders had entered the closed establishment without permission and was found alone with the lights off.

The incident is not the first time Sanders is linked to the restaurant. Surveillance footage from Easter Sunday captured him entering the building, taking a set of spare keys, and staying inside for four hours while the restaurant was closed.

When the police arrived the following evening, Sanders handed the spare keys to owner Matthew Curtis before being booked.

He is currently held at the Metro West Correctional Center. Bond details remain pending, and he faces two burglary charges for entering an unoccupied structure. No injuries or business losses were reported.
