Lawmakers approve M for drone detection ahead of World Cup in South Florida

Florida legislators allocate $16 million for drone monitoring before World Cup.

FDLE officials approved a $16 million allocation on April 17 to finance equipment that can detect radio‑frequency signals from drones, a capability deemed necessary for security around the upcoming FIFA World Cup matches in South Florida. The funding decision was made during a brief budget hearing in Tallahassee.

The purchase is part of a broader safety and security strategy for the seven World Cup games scheduled at Hard Rock Stadium in June and July. FDLE Commissioner Tim Fitzgerald stated that the equipment will help identify unauthorized drones that could pose a threat.

This state contribution follows federal funding of more than $5 million, and it supplements the financial commitments from Miami‑Dade County—expected to spend $38 million to $46 million—and Broward County’s $2 million marketing contribution. Miami‑Dade’s commissioner, Oliver Gilbert, highlighted anticipated economic returns that he says will significantly exceed the public expense.

The project is currently funded and is under review by relevant state and local agencies to ensure compliance with safety regulations and to coordinate with the World Cup’s overall security plan.
