Olivia Rodrigo Faces Criticism Over New Baby Dress Style

Olivia Rodrigo released the music video for “Drop Dead” on May 2024, in which she wore a babydoll‑style dress while filming scenes at the Palace of Versailles. The outfit, described by fashion experts as a short, empire‑waist garment with lace and other feminine details, drew criticism from some social‑media users who argued that the look was sexualizing.

Rodrigo addressed the backlash during an episode of The New York Times podcast “Popcast.” She said the comments upset her and criticized the idea that women are responsible for being sexualized by their clothing. She compared the discussion to broader concerns about how society treats sexual advances toward young women.

Industry commentators noted that babydoll dresses originated in the 1940s and gained popularity in the 1950s and 1960s. The style has historically been seen as both innocent and rebellious, and it has appeared on stage and in film for decades. Other artists, including Sabrina Carpenter and Lana Del Rey, have also worn the look in recent years.

Rodrigo’s statement came as her third studio album, “You Seem Pretty Sad for a Girl So In Love,” is set to release on June 12, 2024, and her “Unraveled Tour” will begin on September 25, 2024, in Connecticut.
