Fort Lauderdale community gathers to honor Sunrise shooting victim
A vigil was held Saturday night in a park in Fort Lauderdale to honor Kendrick English, a 27‑year‑old resident of Sunrise. The gathering drew neighbors, friends, and family who gathered to mourn and celebrate his life.
English’s death occurred early Sunday morning outside the Five Stars Banquet Hall in Sunrise. Police reports state that English was attempting to enter a party when an argument arose with security guard Francisco Sanchez. The guard allegedly refused entry and then shot English multiple times.
Law enforcement is still investigating the shooting. Security guard Francisco Sanchez has been charged with murder and is currently held in custody without bond.
The community held the vigil as a way to support the grieving family and to acknowledge the impact English had in the area. Family members expressed gratitude for the solidarity shown by South Florida residents. The event is seen as a first step toward healing for those left behind.
