Super Mario Galaxy Film Opens Worldwide With $372.5M Returns

The animated sequel “The Super Mario Galaxy Movie” premiered in North America on Wednesday, achieving a $130.9 million opening weekend and $190.1 million in its first five days across 4,252 U.S. and Canadian theaters. The film played in 421 IMAX and 1,345 premium large‑format screens, generating $15 million from IMAX projections. It surpassed the domestic opening of the original 2023 film, which earned $204 million in the same period.

Internationally, the release began on the same day, drawing $182.4 million from 80 overseas markets. Mexico led international grosses with $29.1 million, followed by the U.K. and Ireland. Global totals reach $372.5 million, the largest debut for a PG‑rated movie in recent history, although the Chinese title “Pegasus 3” achieved a slightly higher worldwide opening.

The film’s production budget was reported at $110 million, excluding marketing costs. Despite a 40% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, audience surveys from PostTrak and CinemaScore indicated strong acceptance, with family audiences rating it five stars and overall viewers giving it four stars.

“Project Hail Mary” was displaced from the top of the box‑office chart, and the release is scheduled to debut in Japan later this month. The overall domestic market shows a 30% year‑over‑year increase, with the movie’s performance positioning it as a strong spring opening for the summer blockbusters.
