‘The Devil Wears Prada’ earns $77 million opening, tops earnings chart.

“The Devil Wears Prada 2” opened on Friday across 4,150 theaters in the United States and Canada, earning $77 million domestically and $156.6 million internationally in its first weekend. The film topped the box office, surpassing Lionsgate’s Michael Jackson biopic “Michael,” which totaled $54 million in the same period. Critics offered mixed reviews, noting the return of Anne Hathaway as Andy Sachs working for Meryl Streep’s Miranda Priestly at the fictional Runway magazine. Production costs were reported at $100 million, a rise from the original film’s $35 million budget.

PostTrak exit polls indicated that approximately 76% of ticket purchasers were women, with 74% stating they would recommend the movie. The film’s lead stars—Streep, Hathaway, Emily Blunt, and Stanley Tucci—have participated in a global publicity tour that included Tokyo, London, and New York. Anna Wintour also appeared on the Oscars stage with Hathaway and on the cover of Vogue with Streep.

The theatrical release coincided with the beginning of Hollywood’s summer season, a 18‑week stretch that traditionally accounts for around 40% of the annual box office. Industry analysts noted that the combined performance of “The Devil Wears Prada 2” and “Michael” filled the role of a flagship summer opening typically reserved for Marvel titles.

Other new releases debuted this weekend, including “Hokum,” “Animal Farm,” and “Deep Water,” which collectively earned under $15 million. The Super Mario Galaxy Movie and Project Hail Mary, already in their fifth and seventh weekends respectively, contributed to the overall weekend totals.

As of mid‑May, domestic box‑office receipts have risen approximately 14% year‑over‑year, with roughly $2.8 billion in ticket sales to date. Final domestic figures for the week are expected to be released on Monday.
