Miami‑Dade Fire Academy Faces Diversity Questions in New Graduates.
Miami-Dade Fire Rescue released a photo of its newest graduate class, prompting concerns among former firefighters about the department’s diversity. The image, taken during the graduation ceremony, shows a cohort that many observers believe does not reflect the broader community’s demographics.
Retired firefighter William D.C. Carter said he and others had previously communicated directly with the department’s fire chief regarding potential hiring shortcomings. The mayor, Daniella Levine Cava, acknowledged the concerns and stated that the administration is committed to addressing them through ongoing dialogue.
Investigations by department officials revealed that the Recruit Class 159 were selected from a narrow eligibility list, limiting the pool of candidates. The department cited national recruitment difficulties, a smaller applicant base, and immediate staffing needs as contributing factors.
Captain Charles Francois described the recent meeting with retirees as productive, noting a strengthened partnership around the recruitment process. Despite no formal demands yet, retired firefighters are monitoring the situation closely as the county evaluates its hiring strategies.
