Academy Sets New Regulations for Artificial Intelligence Use

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced new eligibility rules for the 2027 Oscars on Friday. The changes address the use of artificial intelligence in both performances and scripts. While AI tools are not prohibited, the academy will require human authorship to be central to a work’s creative process. Performances must be carried out by humans with their consent, and screenplays must be human‑written. The organization retains the right to request additional information about AI involvement.

The international film category has been expanded. Films that win top awards at major festivals—Cannes, Venice, Toronto, Berlin, Busan, and Sundance—can qualify without being submitted by a country. Eligible films will be credited to the filmmakers rather than a nation, and directors will receive plaque recognition.

Other updates allow actors to receive multiple nominations in the same category in a single year and clarify that original songs used in end‑credit sequences must overlap the final 15 seconds of the film to qualify.
