‘Friday Night Lights’ showrunner tried to write affair storyline – NBC 6 South Florida

Friday Night Lights creator plans marital drama plot.

An interview with the “Friday Night Lights” showrunner revealed that the creative team had drafted an affair storyline for characters Coach Eric Taylor and his wife Tami Taylor. Head writer Jason Katims said the plot was considered but ultimately rejected by actors Kyle Chandler and Connie Britton. Both actors explained that they had insisted on preserving their characters’ marital integrity, describing the marriage as a partnership built on mutual respect and shared mistakes.

The discussion took place in Austin, Texas, during the series’ 20th‑anniversary celebration at the ATX TV Festival. NBC News correspondent Gadi Schwartz sat down with Chandler, Britton and several other cast members while the event marked NBC’s 100th anniversary.

Chandler reflected on Coach Taylor’s famous “Clear eyes, full hearts, can’t lose” mantra, noting that the line encouraged honesty, openness, and integrity among the team. Britton added that the cast felt a strong sense of ownership over their characters, which helped foster a collaborative atmosphere on set.

The reunion panel served as a retrospective look at the show’s legacy, with cast and crew emphasizing the lasting impact of the series on viewers and the entertainment industry.
