Anna Kendrick Begins Directing Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo
Netflix has confirmed that Anna Kendrick will direct a feature film adaptation of Taylor Jenkins Reid’s 2017 novel “The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo.” The announcement was reported on June 1, 2026, following a 2022 Netflix commitment to develop the project. Kendrick, who previously directed the thriller “Woman of the Hour,” will helm the new drama, which centers on investigative reporter Monique Grant as she interviews legendary Hollywood star Evelyn Hugo to uncover the actress’s storied life and multiple marriages.
Production details remain limited. The first draft of the screenplay was written by Liz Tigelaar, with Francesca Sloane currently revising the script. No casting decisions, release date, or additional production timelines have been released. Jessica Chastain has publicly ruled herself out of a role in the adaptation, and no other confirmations regarding the cast are available.
Reid’s novel draws inspiration from actresses such as Elizabeth Taylor, Ava Gardner, and Rita Hayworth, and the narrative framework follows a fictional memoir told through an interview. The film project is now in the directorial stage, with no further official updates as of the current release.
