Gene Shalit, a longtime film critic for NBC’s “TODAY” show, died on Friday at the age of 99. The 100‑year‑old, who began as a part‑time contributor in 1970 and joined full‑time in 1973, retired from the program in 2010 after a career that spanned four decades.
Shalit’s reviews were noted for their colorful language, bowties and trademark mustache. He appeared in the show’s “Critics Corner,” offering commentary on blockbusters, awards‑season titles and independent releases. He also interviewed major Hollywood figures, ranging from Oprah Winfrey to Harrison Ford, and was a regular panelist on shows such as “What’s My Line?” and “To Tell The Truth.”
Before joining television, Shalit worked as a print journalist. He was a senior film critic for Look magazine and wrote for The New York Times, Cosmopolitan and TV Guide. From 1969 to 1982 he broadcast a daily “Man About Anything” essay on NBC’s radio network.
Shalit was married to Nancy Lewis from 1950 until her death in 1978. He passed away peacefully in his home, according to a statement released by his family.
