Google Plans Millions of Mosquitoes in South Florida to Combat Disease

A technology company is planning a large‑scale release of male mosquitoes infected with the bacterium Wolbachia in Florida and California. The program, called De Bug, aims to reduce the populations of disease‑transmitting mosquitoes by preventing offspring from hatching after infected males mate with wild females. The initiative follows a 2018 pilot in Miami‑Dade County that was considered successful but costly.

The release is expected to involve tens of millions of mosquitoes and would be the second year of using Wolbachia‑inoculated insects in a pilot program, primarily targeting the Florida Keys where similar technology has previously been deployed.

Officials in Miami‑Dade and Broward counties have been contacted by the company, and the Environmental Protection Agency has opened a public comment period that will close on Friday.

Public health experts and mosquito control firms emphasize that a multi‑tool approach is necessary to manage vector‑borne diseases such as Zika, chikungunya and West Nile virus. The company is awaiting final regulatory approval before proceeding with the nationwide release.
