Cops warn of scams after Broward senior sends thousands to crooks promising ‘ million and a car’

Broward elder loses millions to fraudsters promising big payout.

Police in Coconut Creek, Florida, issued a warning after an 85‑year‑old resident was scammed for thousands of dollars. The woman received a call claiming she had won a $7 million prize and a car. She responded by mailing two checks, one for $2,500 and another for $1,000, to addresses in Washington state that were later identified as fraud.

Family members contacted the Coconut Creek Police Department after learning of the transactions. Officers discovered the victim at a pottery class on Friday and prevented her from sending additional money to the suspected scammers.

Detective Clint Corey said the woman had completed several fraudulent payments before the police intervened and advised residents to avoid answering calls from unknown numbers, encouraging them to let callers leave a voicemail.

The police have confirmed the incident and are monitoring the situation. No further financial loss has been reported after the intervention.
