Stinky sargassum comes to South Florida shores ― just in time for holiday weekend

Sargassum Washes Ashore South Florida Ahead of Holiday Weekend

Twist of seaweed, identified as sargassum, covered the shores of Hollywood Beach and Fort Lauderdale Beach over the holiday weekend of May 22–25 in Broward County. Satellite images from a local service confirmed large amounts of the brown material had washed ashore during the period.

City crews began shoreline clean‑ups each morning to remove the floating debris. Authorities stated that the quantity of sargassum arriving this year could set a new record.

Sargassum normally supports marine ecosystems; however, when it accumulates on land it dries and emits a strong odor. The presence of the material imposes additional maintenance costs on local governments and reduces the attractiveness of the beaches to tourists.

Officials advised residents that the seaweed will remain on the coast through the fall season and expect to continue daily clean‑up operations. No injuries or hazardous incidents were reported.
