Driver hospitalized after crashing into Sunrise retirement community apartment

Doctor hospitalized after highway crash hits Sunrise retirement complex.

A woman driver was taken to a hospital after striking the front door of an apartment at the Sunrise Lakes Phase 2 retirement community on Friday morning. The incident occurred near the 8500 block of Sunrise Lakes Boulevard, just before 8:30 a.m., according to Sunrise police.

Investigators report the driver, who was operating a gray Hyundai, crossed a parking stump and collided with the unit’s entrance. No injuries were reported among residents or staff, and the driver was transported to a medical facility as a precaution.

The apartment is occupied by a 99‑year‑old resident who receives assistance from two female aides. One aide was arriving to change shifts when the vehicle entered the building instead of the parking area, according to a neighbor who heard a loud impact.

After the crash, the building’s front window was marked with an “unsafe building” sticker and the damaged unit was boarded up while family members of the senior tenant arrived on scene. The police investigation into the crash remains underway.
