Haiti Federal Jury Convicts Four on Major Charges in President Assassination Case
A federal jury in Miami rendered verdicts on Friday in the trial related to the July 7, 2021 murder of Haitian President Jovenel Moïse. The proceedings, which began on March 8 at the Wilkie D. Ferguson Federal Courthouse, lasted over two months and involved testimony from multiple witnesses.
The jury found four defendants guilty on most counts. Antonio Intriago, owner of a South Florida security firm, was convicted of nearly all charges, including conspiracy, but was acquitted of one count alleging participation in an international kidnapping or murder conspiracy. The other defendants—Arcangel Pretel Ortiz, Walter Veintemilla, and James Solages—were also convicted on several counts related to the planning and execution of the attack on the president’s residence near Port-au-Prince.
Attendees and community members present throughout the trial expressed relief that the jury reached a decision after a prolonged legal process. The verdicts are now final, and the defendants will face sentencing in accordance with federal sentencing guidelines.
