Residents push back against proposed expansion of Bal Harbour Shops

Residents oppose announced extension of Bal Harbour Shops

Bal Harbour Village Council met on Monday to review a revised development plan for the Bal Harbour Shops site. The proposal, submitted by developers using Florida’s Live‑Local Act, proposes three buildings that are lower in height than the original four‑structure plan and includes a requirement that 40 % of more than 500 residential units be designated affordable.

Residents assembled in large numbers to voice concerns about the project. Attendees cited increased traffic, strain on local schools, and inadequate infrastructure, including flood management, as reasons to oppose the expansion.

After the meeting, council members voted to reject the revised proposal and indicated that the village would continue litigation against the developers. Court action has been ongoing since the council initially declined the original plan.

The developers have not indicated a new timeline for resubmission. The village will keep the public informed as the legal process proceeds.
