Toy Story 5 Opens to Record‑Breaking $160 Million First‑Weekend Gross

Toy Story 5 opened on June 1 to a domestic box‑office take of $160 million, surpassing the $120 million debut of the 2019 installment and setting a new franchise record. Internationally the film earned $152 million in its first weekend, bringing the worldwide total to $312 million. The release marked the fifth movie in the series, which has collectively grossed over $3 billion worldwide and generated significant merchandising revenue for Disney.

The $250 million production, directed by Andrew Stanton, features the returning voice cast of Tom Hanks as Woody, Tim Allen as Buzz Lightyear and Joan Cusack as Jessie. A new track by Taylor Swift is included in the soundtrack. The film received positive critical reviews and earned an “A” rating from CinemaScore audiences.

During its opening weekend, Toy Story 5 faced limited competition from new releases. The highest‑grossing other film was the sci‑fi thriller Disclosure Day, which earned $17 million in its second weekend after opening at $160.4 million worldwide. Horror titles such as Obsession added to the weekend’s overall box‑office earnings.

According to industry tracking, the summer box office is up about 15 % from the previous year, with sales nearly matching the 2019 summer totals when adjusted for inflation. This upswing reflects a mix of major franchise releases and smaller independent titles that have drawn audiences to theaters.
