Turning Point reveals challenges Republicans like Vance must face.
AmericaFest, the annual conference of Turning Point USA, took place in Phoenix in early December. The event drew leaders from the Republican Party, including Speaker Mike Johnson, Donald Trump Jr., and Vice President JD Vance, who spoke at the end of the program. On opening night, Erika Kirk, the organization’s president, publicly endorsed Vance as the 48th president of the United States.
Vance has not announced a campaign for the 2028 election, but his presence at the conference positioned him as a leading name among Turning Point supporters. Kirk’s endorsement was described as giving momentum to young activists, such as a 20‑year‑old attendee from New Jersey. The conference also highlighted Vance’s close relationship with former Turning Point founder Charlie Kirk, who passed away in 2020.
During the gathering, moderators and commentators debated questions about the Republican Party’s direction following President Trump. Panels addressed policy disputes on topics like antisemitism, Israel, and environmental regulation, reflecting divisions within the movement.
President Trump has not selected a successor but has spoken favorably of Vance and State Secretary Marco Rubio. In August, he described Vance as a likely favorite, and in a later interview he clarified that he is constitutionally barred from running again, noting that the idea of a third term is no longer viable.
