Jill Smokler, who launched Scary Mommy, dies at 48 from brain cancer
Jill Smokler, founder of the parenting website Scary Mommy, died Monday at age 48 after nearly two years of fighting an aggressive brain cancer. Smokler’s diagnosis was announced in early 2024, when she first revealed a glioblastoma diagnosis on May 3. The disease is known for rapid progression, with a typical life expectancy of 12‑18 months and only a small percentage of patients living beyond five years.
The mother of three—Lily, Ben, and Evan—began the Scary Mommy blog while caring for children under four years old. Her candid posts helped many parents confront the realities of motherhood, including the moments of doubt, frustration, and love.
In interviews following her diagnosis, Smokler described the cancer as a recurring, multi‑tentacle form and spoke of alternating sadness and anger. She also shared a wish to spend quality time with her children, especially at a beach, a place she described as a personal haven.
Smokler’s brother, Matt Epstein, confirmed the death and issued a family statement that highlighted her honesty, humor, generosity, and devotion to her children. He noted the profound influence her openness had on countless women and the legacy she left in the parenting community.
