Mississippi River Bridge Collapses After Controlled Implosion

On Friday, December 19, 2025, a 94‑year‑old bridge spanning the Mississippi River between Lansing, Iowa, and Wisconsin was imploded. The demolition was carried out by the Iowa Department of Transportation and removed the central span and one of the truss towers, leaving the structure largely collapsed into the river.

The bridge, completed in 1931 and known as the Black Hawk Bridge, had a distinctive cantilever design with a center arch and two tower‑like trusses. It was the only crossing for about thirty miles on each side of the river and carried approximately 2,100 vehicles daily.

With the bridge closed in October, local drivers have been using a ferry service while a new crossing is being built. The planned $140 million replacement is slated for completion in 2027.

Mayor Michael Verdon expressed sadness about the loss of the historic structure but noted plans to salvage parts of the bridge for a memorial in the town. The implosion was chosen for efficiency after partial dismantling had already occurred.
