America’s top baby boy name revealed for 2025 (exact year)
The 2020 Census name tables show that Michael is the most common first name in the United States, with more than 3.4 million individuals bearing the name. The data reflect naming trends from earlier decades when parents frequently chose traditional, enduring names for sons.
Expert Laura Wattenberg, founder of Namerology, notes that the prevalence of Michael stems from a period of naming uniformity. During much of the 20th century, parents favored a small set of firm, respectable names such as Michael, James, John, Robert, and David for boys, while girl names changed more rapidly over time.
Wattenberg points out that male names remained concentrated for longer, which explains why names like Michael continue to dominate rankings today. She contrasts this with female names, highlighting that even popular girl names have not accumulated the same statistical weight.
The data also illustrate a cultural shift: contemporary parents distribute names more broadly, and modern boy’s names are now part of the fashion cycle. Wattenberg observes that the gap between boys’ and girls’ names has narrowed, with the top ten names featuring an equal split of genders.
