Oscar Connection Pulled After TSA Classified Film as Potential Threat
Russian filmmaker Pavel Talankin was stopped at New York City’s John F. Kennedy Airport on Wednesday while preparing to fly to Germany. TSA agents declared his Oscar statuette a potential weapon and confiscated it, placing the eight‑pound trophy in the cargo hold of the Lufthansa flight. The award was later reported missing when Talankin arrived in Frankfurt on Thursday.
Lufthansa confirmed that the statue has been located and is now in the airline’s care in Frankfurt. The company is coordinating with the award winner to arrange its return and has issued an apology for the inconvenience. The airline stated it is conducting an internal review of the incident and is implementing measures to prevent similar events.
Talankin’s representative, Vitaly Ataev Troshin, noted that the filmmaker has arrived safely in Prague and is awaiting further updates. The TSA has not yet responded to requests for comment.
