Bonnie Tyler Recovers from Coma but Remains Seriously Ill, Family Reports
Bonnie Tyler, the 75‑year‑old Welsh singer, was taken into a medically induced coma after emergency surgery for a perforated intestine in May. The operation was performed in Portugal, where the singer has been receiving care.
Tyler’s family released a statement on Tuesday confirming that she has awakened from the coma but remains in intensive care and is still very unwell. They reported gradual improvement and that doctors are optimistic about a full recovery, though the process is expected to take time.
Because of her condition, all of Tyler’s concert engagements scheduled until August have been cancelled or postponed. The family expressed hope that performances in the autumn could proceed once her health stabilizes.
Tyler resides in Faro, southern Portugal, with her husband, Robert Sullivan. Her career began in the late 1970s with hits such as “It’s a Heartache” and “More Than a Lover,” and she achieved international fame in the 1980s with the Jim Steinman–produced “Total Eclipse of the Heart” and “Holding Out for a Hero.”
