James Burrows, the television director who helped launch and shape many comedic series, died at age 85 in the summer of 2026. His death was confirmed by his attorney to NBC News.

Burrows’ career began in the mid‑1970s after studying at Oberlin College and Yale School of Drama. He earned a reputation directing early shows such as “The Mary Tyler Moore Show,” “Taxi,” and later the iconic “Friends,” “Frasier,” and “The Big Bang Theory.” In 2015 he directed his 1,000th episode while working on “Crowded,” a milestone celebrated by the “Friends” ensemble in New York the following year.

His work earned him 11 Primetime Emmy Awards and five Directors Guild of America honors. He also appeared as a fictionalized version of himself in HBO Max’s “The Comeback” with Lisa Kudrow.

Burrows’ influence was noted by the National Comedy Center, which described him as a defining figure in television comedy. His legacy spans three decades of sitcoms that remain culturally significant.
