On Friday, U.S. President Donald Trump announced that nine pharmaceutical companies had agreed to lower prescription drug prices in the United States. The firms—Amgen, Bristol Myers Squibb, Boehringer Ingelheim, Genentech, Gilead Sciences, GlaxoSmithKline, Merck, Novartis, and Sanofi—will now align Medicaid drug prices with the rates charged in other developed countries.

Under the agreement, any new medication from these companies will be sold nationwide at a “most‑favored‑nation” price, covering commercial, cash‑pay, Medicare, and Medicaid markets. The change is intended to reduce costs for Medicaid beneficiaries and free up state budget space, while also benefiting uninsured patients who lack negotiation leverage.

In addition, the companies will sell pharmacy‑ready drugs on the TrumpRx platform, set to launch in January. They also pledged to donate active pharmaceutical ingredients to a national reserve and produce essential medicines—including antibiotics, rescue inhalers, and blood thinners—for emergencies.

Bristol Myers Squibb announced that it would provide its top‑sold blood‑thinner, Eliquis, free of charge to Medicaid recipients, citing the drug’s high profitability and widespread use in the program.

Trump has negotiated lower pricing with 14 companies since issuing letters to 17 executives, arguing that U.S. brand‑name prices can be up to three times higher than abroad. He said he threatened a 10 % tariff to compel compliance.
