Nick Reiner Undergoes Treatment for Schizophrenia, Reported Sources Say
On Friday, a judge in the Nick Reiner murder case signed a sealed medical order that relates to the defendant’s ongoing treatment for a mental health condition. The order is still confidential and was said to be part of the early stages of the prosecution, which, according to insiders, could delay further court activity.
Several sources confirmed that Reiner had been diagnosed with schizophrenia years prior and was receiving medication at the time of his parents’ deaths. They noted that his prescriptions had been changed or adjusted shortly before the killings, although no specific dates were provided.
Evidence from the investigation indicates that the murder weapon was not recovered, but investigators consider it of limited use given other evidence. The medical examiner ruled the deaths caused by multiple sharp‑force injuries, and the coroner recorded homicide as the manner of death.
Reiner was charged early Tuesday with first‑degree murder of 78‑year‑old Rob Reiner and 68‑year‑old Michele Reiner, both found dead inside their home on Sunday morning. A special circumstances allegation and an additional knife‑use count were added to the indictment.
Following the charges, Reiner was taken into custody in Exposition Park, south of downtown Los Angeles, about 15 miles southeast of Brentwood. The case remains pending, with potential for capital punishment if prosecutors decide to seek the death penalty.
