Find out which movies are raking in awards buzz this year.

The 98th Academy Awards will recognize achievements in over 20 film categories, including a new award for casting. Voting members, numbering close to 10,000, will announce nominees on January 22, with the ceremony scheduled for March 12.

Among the titles drawing significant attention are James Cameron’s third Avatar film, Guillermo del Toro’s adaptation of Frankenstein with Oscar Isaac and Jacob Elordi, and Chloé Zhao’s drama Hamnet, which dramatizes William Shakespeare’s family tragedy.

Iranian filmmaker Jafar Panahi’s It Was Just an Accident, winner of the Cannes Palme d’Or, and Josh Safdie’s period drama Marty Supreme, featuring Timothée Chalamet, are among the frontrunners. Park Chan‑Wook’s satirical thriller No Other Choice with Lee Byung‑Hun and Paul Thomas Anderson’s political thriller One Battle After Another starring Leonardo DiCaprio and Sean Penn also attract attention.

Entries like Joachim Trier’s Sentimental Value, Ryan Coogler’s Sinners about twin brothers in 1932 Mississippi, Joel Edgerton‑starring Train Dreams, and Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande’s Wicked: For Good also appear as potential nominees.

Contenders include Richard Linklater’s biopic of lyricist Lorenz Hart, Yorgos Lanthimos’s Bugonia, Noah Baumbach’s Jay Kelly, Mona Fastvold’s Shaker biopic The Testament of Ann Lee, and Zach Cregger’s horror film Weapons.
