Recent Voter Trends Change Political Planning Across Nation
On December 9, 2025, Democrat Eileen Higgins won Miami’s mayoral runoff, becoming the city’s first female mayor with a 19-percentage-point margin. In 2024, Republican Donald Trump carried the city by less than one percentage point, while Democratic presidential nominee Kamala Harris led there by a similar margin.
In Palm Beach County’s District 90 state House race, Democrat Rob Long defeated Republican Maria Zack by 27 points. Last year, Long’s Democratic predecessor won the same seat by 12 points, with Harris beating Trump by 10 points in the area.
Republican Ralph Massullo retained the State Senate District 11 seat, winning by 18 points. Incumbent Republican Blaise Ingoglia previously won by 39 points in 2024, while Trump led Harris by 40 points there.
Florida Democratic leaders highlighted improved results across diverse regions. Republican officials dismissed the outcomes as nonindicative of 2026 prospects, citing low special election turnout and expected higher Republican participation next cycle.
Recent off-year elections in New York, New Jersey, and Virginia also produced Democratic victories. Florida Republicans maintain a registration edge but face potential midterm voting patterns.
