FCC stops sale of Chinese‑built drones after security concerns
The FCC announced on Monday a ban on new foreign‑made drones, including Chinese brands DJI and Autel. The action follows a 2024 defense bill calling for a security review.
The agency’s assessment determined that all drones and key components produced abroad present unacceptable security risks, but allows exceptions if the Department of Defense or Homeland Security determine a device is safe.
Officials cited events such as the 2026 World Cup, 2028 Olympics, and other high‑profile gatherings as motivations to restrict potential threats from hostile actors.
Industry group AUVSI welcomed the regulation, urging the U.S. to reduce reliance on foreign suppliers and boost domestic drone production.
Texas operators such as Gene Robinson and Arthur Erickson noted the ban could affect law‑enforcement training and agricultural drone use, while urging clarity on exemptions.
