Quinn Ewers set to start game for Dolphins against Bengals.
The Miami Dolphins will start rookie quarterback Quinn Ewers on Sunday, replacing Tua Tagovailoa. The 6‑8 team hosts the Cincinnati Bengals (4‑10) at Hard Rock Stadium for a 1 p.m. kickoff. Head coach Mike McDaniel announced the change earlier this week after a leak of the decision.
Ewers was a five‑star recruit out of Southlake Carroll High School in Texas, where he first sported a long mullet. The hair became a signature look during his sophomore year, and it was bleached white for the high‑school playoff run. He cut the style after a discussion with Texas head coach Steve Sarkisian when he joined the Longhorns.
After a season on the sidelines at Ohio State, Ewers transferred to Texas. Over two years, he threw for 9 128 yards and 68 touchdowns and led the Longhorns to the College Football Playoff semifinal, where they fell to the eventual national champion Ohio State.
Drafted in the seventh round, Ewers spent most of his first 14 Dolphins games as the third‑string quarterback. He saw limited action in a blowout loss in Cleveland but was elevated to the backup role for a single game.
Ewers, 23, expresses gratitude for the opportunity to play in the NFL and describes himself as confident rather than cocky. Coach McDaniel cited Ewers’s “natural confidence and conviction” as reasons for starting him. The Bengals rank 28th in pass defense, while Miami will lean on its run game to support the rookie’s debut.
