Democrat defeats MAGA Republican in Florida House special election

Democratic nominee wins Florida House seat over Republican challenger.

Rob Long was elected to represent Florida House District 90 in a special election held December 9, 2025, receiving 9,553 votes, or 63.2 % of the vote. Republican candidate Maria Zack garnered 5,424 ballots, or 35.9 %, and independent Karen Yeh received 146 votes, about 1 %.

The seat had become vacant after the July 2025 death of incumbent Democrat Joe Casello. Long will serve the remainder of Casello’s term through the 2026 legislative session and will run again in the next general election.

Long, 40, previously served on the Delray Beach City Commission until resigning to pursue the state seat. His background includes work as a loss‑control engineer, a political organizing firm, and past service on the Palm Beach Soil and Water Conservation District board. He was also president of the Palm Beach County Young Democrats and co‑authored a children’s book titled The Great Weather Diviner.

Endorsements for Long came from Democratic legislators and statewide unions, while some Republican‑aligned groups—such as the Florida Chamber of Commerce—also supported him. Despite Zack’s campaign, the election was characterized by a broad coalition backing Long.

House Democratic Leader Fentrice Driskell and future leader Christine Hunschofsky issued congratulatory statements, noting Long’s focus on affordability, public safety, and family issues for the district.
